Citizen Advisory Council

The Columbia Police Department established a Citizen Advisory Council (CAC), which is comprised of eight members representing Columbia’s diverse demographics and occupations. Created in June 2015, the CAC fosters proactive relationships with an open dialogue between CPD and citizens. Members are hand-selected during an application and vetting process by city leaders and CPD staffers, and are required to go through training on the department’s policies and procedures, as well as the citizen’s police academy. The CAC provides civilian oversight and reviews how CPD addresses complaints against officers, and other internal affairs matters.

Additionally, members serve up to three (3) years, with an opportunity to continue for one (1) additional term. Members work on issues of concern and share insights and recommendations that could positively foster and impact relationships between the department and community.
