The Public Information Officer (PIO) is part of the Office of the Chief. The PIO is responsible for acting as the official spokesperson for the release of information to the news media along with informing the public through the news media of current police operations and services. The following are additional responsibilities of the Public Information Officer:

  • Responsible for gathering pertinent news worthy information from all divisions for dissemination to the news media.

  • Respond to major crime scenes and major incidents and events which draw media attention. After arriving at crime scenes and major incidents, the PIO coordinates the release of information to the news media.

  • Responsible for setting up press conferences, news briefings and any other gatherings where the Chief of Police will address the news media, community groups or outside agencies.


The Public Information Officer is located at Police Headquarters on #1 Justice Square, Columbia, SC 29201.
