From the City of Columbia’s Public Relations, Marketing and Media Department:
In preparation for the unveiling of the statue honoring Coach Dawn Staley, the City of Columbia advises citizens that the following roads will be closed from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30, 2025:
- Lincoln Street between Gervais Street and Pendleton Street
- Senate Street between Lincoln Street and Park Street
The eastbound lane on the 900 block of Senate Street will be closed tomorrow morning starting at 8:00 a.m., from Lincoln Street to the mid-block U-turn point. At 12:30 p.m., the westbound lane on the 900 block of Senate Street, from Lincoln Street to the mid-block U-turn point, will also be closed.
The Columbia Police Department will provide traffic control assistance in these areas as City of Columbia staff set up for the unveiling ceremony.
The City of Columbia also encourages attendees to take precautions to stay safe and comfortable in the heat:
- Hydrate: Drink water consistently, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
- Dress Smart: Opt for light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and a wide-brimmed hat to reflect sunlight and allow air circulation.
- Sun Protection: Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to all exposed skin, and reapply every two hours.
- Seek Shade: Whenever possible, stay under shade structures or use an umbrella to minimize direct sun exposure.
- Cooling Accessories: Consider using portable fans or cooling towels to help lower your body temperature.
By following these tips, you can enjoy the event while minimizing the risk of heat-related issues.
