Events & Traffic Closures

The most up-to-date lists for upcoming special events and traffic closures are shown below. Special Events are coordinated and executed through the Columbia Police Department Special Events Unit for local festivals, parades and races (run/walk). The traffic closures detailed below may include obstruction to the regular flow of traffic with one or more lane being temporarily closed or barricaded and an alternative route.

Columbia Police Department officers will be present to ensure safe and efficient traffic flow for commuters.

2024 Governor's Cup Half Marathon, 5K & Main Street Mile

Temporary Road Closures | Friday, April 12 & Saturday, April 13, 2024

The 2024 Governor’s Cup Half Marathon, 5K Run, and Main Street Mile is scheduled for April 12-13, 2024.

On Friday, April 12, 2024, the 1800 block of Main
Street will be closed at 5:00 p.m. to allow for set-up of the start/finish line for the ‘Main Street Mile Run.’

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. and will end at 7:45 p.m.

On Saturday, April 13, 2024, the 1100 block of Sumter St. will be closed at 5:00 a.m. to set up the start line for the Governor’s Cup Half-Marathon and 5K Run.

Also at 5:00 a.m., CPD officers will close the 1100 block of Park St. to allow for set-up of the finish lines.

The Half Marathon begins at 7:30 a.m.

Parade to Celebrate University of South Carolina's Women's Basketball Team

Temporary Road Closures | Sunday, April 14, 2024

City Manager Teresa Wilson has announced that the City of Columbia will host a parade in honor of the University of South Carolina Women’s Basketball team’s NCAA National Championship.

The parade will be held on Sunday, April 14 at 2:00 p.m. starting on the 1700 block of Main Street (corner of Main and Laurel Streets).

The City will invite local elected officials, government entities, and community partners to join Mayor Daniel Rickenmann, City Council members, and USC officials in the parade.

City Announces Parking and Road Closure Plans Ahead of the USC Women’s Basketball Team National Championship Parade

The City of Columbia announces plans for parking and road closures ahead of the parade that will be held on Sunday, April 14, 2024, at 2 p.m. to celebrate the USC Women’s Basketball Team on their 2024 National Championship win.

Road Closings

Please review the following road closure information beginning at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 14, 2024:

12:30 p.m.  Road Closures – 1000-1100 Sumter St.

1:30 p.m.     Road Closures – 1200-1700 Main St.

2:00 p.m.     Parade will begin

*Roads will re-open once the parade has ended and clean-up has been completed.

Please note: The process of bagging meters will begin at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, however, enforcement will not begin until midnight on Sunday, April 14.

ADA parking will be available at the 1420 Assembly Street Surface Lot on a first-come, first-serve basis.

*Limited handicap viewing will be available at Main Street and Washington Street on the west side.

Parking will be available at City Parking Facilities at no charge.  (See list below). We ask that you do not park in reserved spaces.

Restrooms

Restrooms will be available at these locations:

  • City of Columbia office building, Washington Square, located at 1136 Washington Street, the corner of Main Street and Washington Street – Open from 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • The corner of Richland Street and Main Street restrooms (exterior porta-johns) will be open from 12:00 p.m. – to 5:00 p.m.
  • The corner of Gervais Street and Main Street (exterior porta-johns) – Open from 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
