Bonus Information

$5000 - Sign-on Pay Bonus

All Class 1 Police Candidates and Newly Hired Certified Class 1 F/T Police Officers are eligible for a $5000.00 bonus.

Applies to Police Candidates with no prior law enforcement experience

  • Must successfully complete Basic Candidate School, (BCS), the SCCJA and the CPD Field Training Program

Applies to prior In-State Certified Police Officers

  • May have to complete the BCS and CPD Field Training programs consistent with their knowledge, ability and training SCCJA requirements

Applies to prior Out-of-State Certified Police Officers

  • May have to complete BCS, Special Basic or the SCCJA BLE and the CPD Field Training program consistent with their knowledge, ability and training

Two-Step Payment Plan

The Sign-On-Bonus will be applied in (2) payments

  1. First payment of $2500.00 at the successful completion of the CPD Field Training Program
  2. Second payment of $2500.00 at the candidate’s two-year hiring anniversary

* The bonus can only be awarded once.  In other words, you cannot receive the bonus, work here for a couple of years then depart and return again to receive another hiring bonus. Must have been separated from the Columbia, SC Police Department for a minimum of 3 years to be eligible for this bonus. The bonus does not apply to P/T Positions.

Additional Bonus Plans

$500 - Annual "Language Bonus"

(Sworn Only) in addition to Primary Duty

Languages Accepted:

  • Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Arabic, Farsi and Sign Language, (no other languages accepted at this time)(ASL certified)
  • Applicants for second languages must show proficiency by an approved entity by speaking, understanding, reading and writing
  • You will receive a payment of $500.00 for your first language and $250.00 for all subsequent languages not to exceed $1000.00
  • An example of this program would be, if you are receiving $500.00 for one of the languages listed and you in turn are a member of S.W.A.T. then you will only receive $250.00 for S.W.A.T., for a total of $750.00.

*Annual pay bonuses for Specialized Training and Languages cannot exceed $1000.00 annually.  This means that you can only receive a one-time annual payment of $500.00 for either specialized duties or language(s) and $250.00 for any additional specialized duty or language.  This does not preclude you from also getting a residency bonus and/or new hire bonuses.

$500 - Annual "Specialized Duties Bonus"

(Sworn Only) in addition to Primary Duty

Specialized Duties:

  • .S.W.A.T., Crisis Negotiations Team, Mobile Field Force, Bomb Team, and Training Instructor

Criteria for bonus:

  • Successfully complete and pass all Specialized Training
  • Perform in the position for one year and have a confirmation letter from the supervisor in charge of the specialized task
  • A letter must be submitted each year to remain eligible for the bonus

Criteria for additional specialized bonuses ($250):

  • Each additional specialized duty receives a payment of $250.00. An example would be that you receive $500.00 for being a Training Instructor, but you are also a S.W.A.T. member thus you would also receive $250.00, for a total of $750.00, however, you cannot exceed $1,000.00 for a combination of specialized duties and/or languages
  • A second language carries the same monetary restrictions as the Specialized Duties.
