By November 25, 2025Press Releases

Columbia Police Department (CPD) investigators have charged a 56-year-old man in connection with a non-fatal shooting that happened earlier this month on Middleburg Drive.

According to Police Chief W.H. ‘Skip’ Holbrook, Mark Baumgartner is charged with Assault and Battery of a High and Aggravated Nature (SC Code of Law: 16-1-60) and Possession of a Weapon during a Violent Crime. Baumgartner is housed at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center (ASGDC).

The charges stem from a thorough review of surveillance video from various sources, witness information, and consultation with the Fifth Circuit Solicitor’s Office.

Case Re-Cap

Shortly before 11:00 a.m. on November 14, 2025, CPD officers were dispatched to a reported shooting at the 2700 block of Middleburg Drive. Officers found the male victim in a parking lot with a gunshot injury. He was taken to a hospital where he was treated and has since been released.

After reviewing video surveillance, including from cell phones, and speaking with multiple witnesses, the shooting stemmed from an argument along Middleburg Drive between Baumgartner and the victim. The argument then turned physical moments before the shooting occurred.

All persons arrested/charged are presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
