Arrest Made in Fatal Shooting Investigation

Columbia Police Department (CPD) investigators have charged a 20-year-old man in connection with a fatal shooting that happened at the Colony Apartments last weekend.

Police Chief W. H. ‘Skip’ Holbrook announces that Markus Geavontay Brown is charged with Murder and Possession of a Weapon during a Violent Crime. He remains housed at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. Brown was arrested yesterday with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force at the 1500 block of Bailey Street.

Investigators believe that after an argument on May 25, 2024, at the Colony Apartments, Brown shot and killed the 23-year-old victim identified by the Richland County Coroner’s Office as Marquicas Taylor.

CPD officers responded to the 6400 block of Bailey Street shortly before 1:30 a.m. last Saturday after receiving a ShotSpotter alert. When they arrived, they found evidence of a shooting. Beforehand, the victim was taken to a local hospital by an acquaintance and was pronounced deceased a short time later.

Investigators continue to determine a motive for the shooting.

All persons arrested/charged are presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
