Youths Charged in Public Park & School Incidents

Columbia Police Department (CPD) officers have charged a male juvenile after an incident this afternoon at Alcorn Middle School (AMS).

The 12-year-old student has been petitioned to family court after being charged with Unlawful Communication and Disturbing Schools.

The child is accused of getting upset with a teacher, then calling school administrators claiming that an AMS teacher had been shot.

A CPD officer assigned as a School Resource Officer (SRO) at AMS investigated and determined that no school administrator had been injured or threatened.

After being questioned by officers, the child was turned over to a parent.

Another Teen Charged:

In a weekend case, CPD charged a teenage girl after being accused of making threats at a public event attended by youth.

17-year-old Shatila Thomas was charged with Public Disorderly Conduct. Thomas has been released from the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center on a $257 personal recognizance bond.

The suspect allegedly made threats to cause physical harm to those attending a City of Columbia Parks and Recreation step show event at Lorick Park (1600 Lorick Avenue) on Saturday, February 24, 2018.

Thomas allegedly made the threat after being told by an adult to leave a prohibited area inside the park.

After hearing the threat, the employee immediately called law enforcement to investigate.

Taking Proactive Measures:

  • Youth should notify an adult or law enforcement of a threat made, whether at school, or public /community event
  • Parents/Guardians are encouraged to talk with children about the negative effects/dangers of making threats
  • Law enforcement will investigate a threat’s credibility
