The Columbia Police Department (CPD) offers the public complimentary active shooter training called ‘Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events’ (CRASE), and focuses on three acts: Avoid, Deny, and Defend (ADD).
This program provides businesses with information, training, and best practices relating to prevention, deterrence, detection, and hands-on response to an Active Shooter/Intruder event.
This program is designed to foster a prevention mindset by:
- Reinforcing the use and importance of safety measures already in place
- Identifying and assessing potential threats (external/internal)
- Promoting and encouraging the “See Something Say Something” rule.
The lessons are structured for easy learning and retention, particularly techniques citizens can use to save lives in the minutes before law enforcement arrives on the scene.
In previous years, the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training Organization (ALERRT) was created following the 1999 Columbine High School tragedy. ALERRT focuses on increased training for first responders and civilians during active shooter emergencies.
