Columbia Police Hosts DOJ as Part of 21st Century Policing Initiative

By August 25, 2016December 31st, 2016Press Releases

Columbia Police Chief Skip Holbrook announces that on August 17-19, members of the CNA, a grantee partner of the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), were in Columbia to meet with Police Department staff and members of the Department’s Citizen Advisory Council. During the visit they also attended community events.

CNA conducted the site visit in conjunction with the COPS Office Advancing 21st Century Policing Initiative. The Columbia Police Department was just one of 15 law enforcement agencies nationwide to be selected by the COPS Office to participate in the Advancing 21st Century Policing Initiative.

The Department was selected to participate because of its progress in implementing the recommendations of the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing. CNA will provide technical assistance and resources to further additional implementation efforts of the Columbia Police Department.

After CNA completes an analysis and review of the implementation efforts of each of the 15 participating law enforcement agencies, the organization will produce a “how to” manual for other agencies that will include best practices, lessons learned and case studies of the participating agencies.

Chief Holbrook says, “We have an opportunity to be a part of history and in the advancement of law enforcement across the nation.”

The COPS Office launched the Advancing 21st Policing Initiative in May 2016 to coincide with the anniversary of the release of the Final Report of the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing.

The COPS Office also released a one-year progress report on the implementation of the Task Force recommendations highlighting the implementation efforts of law enforcement agencies across the country, including the Columbia Police Department.
