Columbia Police to Conduct DUI & Public Safety Checkpoints this Weekend

The Columbia Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit will conduct DUI enforcement and public safety checkpoints this weekend.

Officers will enhance patrols in entertainment districts and at a major Interstate to deter reckless and impaired driving, speeding and other motor vehicle violations that can cause collisions.

Every vehicle that enters a checkpoint will be stopped.

Officers will check drivers for:

* Valid driver’s license

* Possible Impairment

* Seatbelt Use

* Proper child restraints (when applicable)

* Any other violations of law that may be observed

Safety Tips:

* Find a designated driver if you are planning to consume alcohol

* Wear your seatbelt

* Obey the rules of the road

* Do not speed

* Stay alert

* Do not text and drive

The South Carolina Highway Patrol will be assisting CPD this weekend.

Drivers are encouraged to call 9-1-1, or *HP if they suspect that a driver is impaired or reckless.
