Teen Charged with Assault After Causing Injury to CPD Officer

Columbia Police officers have arrested a 19-year-old female after causing an injury to a fellow officer and hitting a citizen’s car and leaving the scene.

Keandra Chanel Anderson (DOB: 8-21-1997) is charged with Assault and Battery of a High and Aggravated Nature, Hit and Run and Driving Under Suspension (3rd).

CPD officers initially responded to the 6000 block of Garners Ferry Road, near Devine Street shortly before 1:00 p.m. today. Witnesses reported that Anderson hit the back of their vehicle and left the scene. There were no reported injuries during the incident. The witness was able to provide officers with a vehicle description and license plate number.

A short time later, another CPD officer spotted the car and initiated a traffic stop. When asked, Anderson allegedly refused to remove the keys from the ignition.  As the officer tried to remove them for safety reasons, Anderson is accused of driving away, dragging the officer a short distance, and causing him to fall on the roadway. Although the officer was not seriously hurt, he suffered from scrapes and lacerations and was treated by EMS on the scene.

Additional officers were able to locate the suspect’s car at the 5200 block of Middleton Street, where Anderson was arrested.

Anderson is booked at the Alvin S. Detention Center (ASGDC). All persons arrested/charged are presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
