The man who shot and killed an aspiring school teacher and shot at a Columbia Police Officer two years ago was sentenced today to fifty years in prison.

Ibin Kenta Patterson (DOB: 5-22-1970) entered the plea this morning inside a Richland County General Sessions courtroom.

Patterson received his sentence on the following CPD charges:

*Murder

*Attempted Murder

*Possession of a Weapon during the Commission of a Violent Crime

*Possession of a Firearm and Ammunition by a Person Convicted of a Felony

In the summer of 2015, Patterson shot and killed 32-year-old Timothy Gentry at the corner of Beaufort Street and River Drive. Gentry was an aspiring teacher and worked with disabled citizens. According to Richland County Coroner Gary Watts, Gentry died from a gunshot wound to the upper body.

Patterson also shot at a Columbia Police officer on the intersection of Taylor Street and Two Notch Road in July 2015.  The officer was responding to an armed robbery call when Patterson shot at him.

After the shooting, Patterson tried to hide on a building’s rooftop on the 2300 bock of Taylor Street to evade police. After several hours and assistance from the SC Law Enforcement Division (SLED), Patterson was arrested.

Patterson is expected to be housed at a South Carolina Department of Corrections facility.
