Update: Traffic Unit’s Public Safety Checkpoint Results

The Columbia Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit, North Region Officers, K-9 Team members and police cadets conducted a public safety checkpoint and DUI enforcement on Duke Avenue in North Columbia today.

Officers focused on this area near Monticello Road after receiving citizens’ concerns about speeding and reckless driving and from statistical data regarding motor vehicle collisions and other traffic violations.

Here are the violation totals from today’s enforcement:

Driving Under Suspension – First Degree (DUS) = 5

Driving Under Suspension – Second Degree (DUS) = 1

Operating Uninsured Vehicle = 3

Child Restraint Violation = 2

Simple Possession of Marijuana (SPMJ) = 3

No Driver’s License = 1

Open Container (Alcohol) – 1

Officers checked drivers for:

* Valid driver’s license

* Possible Impairment

* Seatbelt Use

* Proper child restraints (when applicable)

* Any other violations of law that may be observed

* Wear your seatbelt

* Obey the rules of the road
