The Columbia Police Department’s (CPD) Traffic Safety Unit continues to investigate last night’s fatal collision involving a pedestrian.
Officers responded to the 2400 block of Millwood Avenue shortly before 7:30 p.m.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the female driver was traveling westbound on Millwood Avenue toward Gervais Street when she hit the female pedestrian.
At this time, officers believe that the pedestrian was unlawfully crossing the roadway at the time by not utilizing the crosswalk. Officers say that the pedestrian was also wearing dark clothing, which was a contributing factor to the incident.
Officers also determined that the driver called 9-1-1 and left the scene of the incident. She was located and questioned on Hillmark Drive a short time later.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office is assisting CPD with the investigation.
