By November 20, 2017Press Releases

The Columbia Police Department’s (CPD) Traffic Safety Unit (TSU) has charged the driver of a vehicle that struck and killed a 22-year-old male victim.

Charles Davenport, Junior, (DOB: 8-30-1993) is being housed at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center (ASGDC) charged with Felony DUI Involving Death in connection with a collision that occurred on November 15, 2017 at the 1800 block of Rosewood Drive.

A bond hearing for Davenport is set for tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

Davenport was released from a local hospital today after receiving injuries during the collision.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts has previously identified the victim as David Newell (DOB: 9-21-1995), and determined that Newell died on November 17, 2017, due to complications from injuries received in the collision.

The initial TSU investigation indicates that suspect Davenport was under the influence of alcohol and was speeding when he hit Newell’s moped from behind.  The impact caused the two vehicles to strike a tree.

All persons arrested/charged are presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
