Arrest Made in Matthews Street Arson Investigations

By January 30, 2018Press Releases

A Columbia Police Department (CPD) fire investigator has arrested a man in connection with two arson cases.

As a result, Michael Young (DOB: 1-22-1969) has been charged with Two Counts of Arson – Second Degree and Two Counts of Burglary – Third Degree after being accused of breaking into the following houses: 2405 – B Matthews Street (non-residential) on January 12, 2018 and 2403 Matthews Street (residential) on January 24, 2018.

In the first arson, Young allegedly set materials on fire, causing damage to the structures and contents.

Then on January 24, 2018,  Columbia fire crews and CPD responded to 2403 Matthews Street  and found partially burned materials in two rooms of the home. The resident was not home at the time of the blaze.

While investigators continue to determine an exact motive for the incidents, they believe the fires were targeted acts against Young’s female acquaintance.

Young is housed at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center (ASGDC).

All persons arrested/charged are presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
