The Columbia Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit continues to investigate a deadly overnight collision that occurred on Leesburg Road.
The initial CPD investigation indicates that the 19-year-old driver, who’s been identified by Richland County Coroner Gary Watts as Robert D. Edelmayer was traveling west on Leesburg Road in a Chevrolet Blazer when it left the roadway and struck a curb.
As the Chevy approached the intersection of Leesburg Road and Garden Springs, the vehicle proceeded through a fence, and struck a tree before coming to final rest.
The victim was transported to a local hospital where medical staff pronounced him deceased at 7:00 a.m., approximately 3 1/2 hours after the collision. According to Watts, Edelmayer died from multiple blunt force injuries.
