Auto-Breaking Suspect Arrested

Columbia Police Department (CPD) North Region officers have arrested a 21-year-old man accused of breaking into a car at a local retail center.

As a result, Jaquan Ashford is charged with Autobreaking and Possession of Cocaine.

Officers were dispatched to 1326 Bush River Road (Wal-Mart) on June 20, 2018 after the victim in the case reportedly saw the suspect inside of his 2007 Dodge Charger.

When officers arrived on scene, they located Ashford after receiving a detailed description of the suspect from dispatchers.

Moments before Ashford was detained, an officer saw him toss a screwdriver and a black plastic bag containing a white powdery substance on the ground.   The substance field-tested positive for cocaine.

The crime was also captured on surveillance video, and the victim identified the man as the suspect.

While an officer processed the victim’s vehicle for possible fingerprints, she noticed damage to the driver’s side door lock. Pictures of the vehicle were taken as part of the investigation.

Ashford was transported and booked at the Lexington County Detention Center.

All persons arrested/charged are presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
