Columbia Police Department (CPD) investigators have arrested a man accused of assaulting a female victim during an early morning home burglary and attempted sexual conduct incident.

As a result, 23-year-old Kaleel Rashad McCown is charged with Assault with Intent to Commit Criminal Sexual Conduct – First Degree, Assault – First Degree, Burglary – First Degree and Kidnapping.

McCown is accused of forcing his way into the victim’s Bailey Street home at approximately 12:30 this morning.

Once inside, McCown allegedly prevented her from leaving the apartment and made sexual demands. When she didn’t comply, McCown is accused of repeatedly hitting her in the face.

In an effort to help her, a nearby male acquaintance heard the victim struggling and broke a window to the apartment and injured his hand. The suspect ran from the scene but was found a short time later in another Bailey Street residence and was arrested.

The victims were treated and released from a local hospital. Meanwhile, McCown was booked at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center (ASGDC).

All persons arrested/charged are presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
