Fourth Teen Arrested in Attempted Murder Investigations

Columbia Police Chief W.H. ‘Skip’ Holbrook announces the arrest of a third teenager in connection with two attempted murder investigations from April.

Savion Jaquon Smith (DOB: 11-18-2001) was located today at the Shores at Elders Pond Apartments at the 4500 Hardscrabble Road by the CPD Fugitive Team and US Marshal’s Task Force.

Smith has been charged with Five Counts of Attempted Murder, Armed Robbery, Two Counts of Possession of a Weapon during a Violent Crime, Two Counts of Possession of a Handgun by Person under the Age of 18, and Unlawful Carrying of a Pistol.

Two 14-year-olds and a 16-year-old were also arrested in connection with the same crimes.

A 14-year-old was charged with Attempted Murder, Attempted Armed Robbery, Possession of a Firearm during a Violent Crime, Unlawful Carrying of a Handgun and Possession of a Handgun by Person under 18.

A 14-year-old was charged with Five Counts of Attempted Murder, Possession of a Firearm during a Violent Crime, Unlawful Carrying of a Handgun, and Possession of a Handgun by a Person under 18.

The 16-year-old was charged with Four Counts of Attempted Murder, Possession of a Firearm during a Violent Crime, Unlawful Carrying of a Handgun and Possession of a Handgun by a Person under 18.

All of the charges stem from the following two shooting incidents:

April 24, 2019 | Approximately 6:15 p.m. | 2300 block of Marshall Street

CPD Officers were dispatched to the incident location after receiving a ShotSpotter gunshot detection technology alert.

During this call for service, Smith and the two 14-year-olds are accused of trying to steal the victim’s belongings. As the 19 and 9-year-old male victims ran away from the scene, the suspects reportedly pulled out firearms and shot at them. No one was injured and belongings were not stolen.

April 24, 2019 | Approximately 7:15 p.m. | 6204 Benedict Street

In this incident, officers were dispatched to the incident location after multiple residents called 9-1-1 to report hearing gunfire.

CPD investigators determined that Smith, one of the 14-year-olds, and the 16-year-old allegedly shot at a home at 6204 Benedict Street.

The four victims inside (31-year-old female, 15-year-old male, 12-year-old male and 2-year-old male) were not injured. CPD officers found property damage as a result of the shooting.

All of the suspects are currently housed at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center (ASDGC).

All persons arrested/charged are presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
