Traffic Safety Unit Investigates Serious Moped Collision

The Columbia Police Department’s (CPD) Traffic Safety Unit (TSU) is investigating a serious traffic collision between a moped and car that occurred shortly before 8:00 a.m. at the 400 block of Lake Murray Boulevard and Kinley Road.

Preliminary information – Based on witness statements and information gathered at the scene, it appears that the 36-year-old male moped driver disregarded a traffic signal while traveling west and collided with a Hyundai Elantra.  At the same time, the driver of the car was making a left turn from Lake Murray onto Kinley Road by using a green arrow traffic signal.

The moped driver suffered serious upper and lower body injuries, especially to his legs. He was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment.
