Columbia Murder Suspect Extradited from New York

Columbia Police Department (CPD) investigators have extradited a man from New York in connection with a September murder investigation on Patterson Road.

36-year-old James Hanton (DOB: 7-3-1983) is currently housed at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center and is charged with Murder and Possession of a Weapon during the Commission of a Violent Crime.

Hanton allegedly shot an acquaintance who was identified by the Richland County Coroner’s Office as 25-year-old Michael Brice in the upper body after an argument at 7311 Patterson Road on September 6, 2019.

Four days after the crime,  Hanton was captured in Buffalo, New York by members of the Buffalo, New York Police Department and the United States Marshals Fugitive Task Force.

All persons arrested/charged are presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
