Fatal Shooting on East Chapel Drive | Capri Apartments

Columbia Police Department (CPD) investigators have consulted with the Fifth Circuit Solicitor’s Office regarding this week’s fatal shooting on East Chapel Drive and have deemed it self-defense under SC Code of Law Section: 16-11-440, therefore no charges will be filed.

After conducting a thorough investigation that included interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence from the scene, it has been determined that the 23-year-old deceased male in the case was the armed aggressor and fought with a male resident.

Shortly after 11:00 p.m. (May 11, 2021), the man reportedly arrived unannounced at the Capri Apartments and began arguing and assaulting a male acquaintance inside while armed with a gun. The victim’s brother saw the assault, pushed his brother out of way for safety and fatally shot the aggressor.

The two male victims inside the apartment called 9-1-1 immediately after the shooting and have been cooperative with CPD investigators.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office is assisting CPD with the case.
