PUBLIC NOTICE: Upcoming Accreditation Assessment

The Columbia Police Department (CPD) is scheduled for a site-based assessment as part of its voluntary participation in a national program to maintain law enforcement accreditation by verifying it meets professional standards.

Administered by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA®) Inc., the accreditation program requires agencies to comply with state-of-the-art standards in four (4) basic areas: policy and procedures, administration, operations, and support services.

Agency members and the public are invited to offer comments by telephone to (803) 545-3936 on Tuesday, October 19, 2021, between the hours of 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.  Telephone calls are limited to ten (10) minutes.

Also, as part of the site-based assessment, agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session on Tuesday, October 19, 2021.

The call-in session will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m. Due to COVID-19 protocols, the session will be conducted virtually over ZOOM, with ten (10) minute discussions allowed per person.

Questions and comments will be taken by CALEA®) Assessors Undersheriff Jason Cassalia of Onondaga County (NY) Sheriff’s Office and Lt. Colonel Michael Palkovics, Henrico County (VA) Police Department.

Any person wishing to offer written comments about CPD’s ability to meet the standards for accreditation are requested to write the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement, Inc. (CALEA®), 13575 Heathcote Boulevard, Suite 320 Gainesville, Virginia 20155.

Emails, written comments, and telephone calls should address the agency’s ability to comply with (CALEA®) standards.

A copy of the standards is available at the CPD.  Please email the Accreditation Manager, Felicia Prince-Heath at [email protected] or (803) 545-3398 for a time and date to come to the department and review the standards.
