Man Charged in Motor Vehicle Theft Investigations

Columbia Police Department (CPD) officers have charged a 36-year-old man in connection with various motor vehicle thefts. The suspect remains hospitalized after sustaining significant injuries in the most recent crime.

Once released from medical care, Zachary N. Williams will be taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center (ASGDC) and will be charged with Reckless Driving, Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, Failure to Stop for Blue Lights, and Driving without a License.

The charges stem from an incident on June 23, 2022 when a CPD officer saw Williams driving a stolen 1997 Harley Davidson at the intersection of Rosewood and Kalmia Drive.  The vehicle was stolen from a Fort Jackson Boulevard home. The officer recognized the suspect and the motorcycle from a police ‘be on the look out’ bulletin and conducted a traffic stop.

Williams refused to stop for police blue lights and sirens and drove through multiple stop signs at excessive speeds.  He later wrecked and was quickly detained by CPD officers.  EMS took Williams to a local hospital for injuries to his arms and legs.

Williams is also accused of stealing another motorcycle, a Kawasaki from an Edmond Drive home on June 16, 2022. A CPD officer was able to collect and process forensic evidence and link Williams to the crime.

Williams is also wanted by the South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) on similar charges.

All persons arrested/charged are presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
