By October 17, 2022October 18th, 2022Press Releases

Columbia Police Department (CPD) officers arrested a 43-year-old man accused of driving a stolen car after a brief police pursuit and foot chase.

The suspect, Jimmy Morton remains housed at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center (ASGDC) charged with Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, Failure to Stop for Blue Lights and Siren, and Failure to Stop on Police Command and Vandalism.

The charges stem from an initial traffic stop shortly after 8:00 p.m. yesterday near the 4700 block of Monticello Road. A CPD officer spotted the car, a silver 2010 Ford Edge that was reported stolen on October 14, 2022, from the Richland County Sheriff’s Department’s jurisdiction.

Morton is accused of not stopping from blue lights and sirens, driving to the 2600 block of Cardinal Street, and colliding with shrubbery. Officers then saw Morton run from the scene and elude them by climbing stairs and reaching the home’s rooftop. Morton jumped off the roof and onto a custom-built awning. He fell to the ground and ran from CPD officers again.

After a brief foot chase, Morton was captured in a wooded area nearby. Meanwhile, the stolen vehicle was returned to the owner. Morton was taken to a local hospital before going to the ASGDC.

All persons arrested/charged are presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
