By October 31, 2022November 1st, 2022Press Releases

Columbia Police Department (CPD) investigators are searching for a male armed suspect accused of stealing a cell phone from a victim during an internet exchange over the weekend.

Investigators have active arrest warrants for 25-year-old Terrell Carter. Once captured, he will be charged with Strong Armed Robbery and Pointing and Presenting (a Firearm). Carter should be considered armed and dangerous.

The crime happened shortly after 4:30 p.m. on October 30, 2022 at the 900 block of Assembly (business parking lot). The victim explained to CPD officers that the incident location was a pre-arranged meeting site for the phone sale. He adds that the suspect displayed a gun while stealing the phone before running away from the scene. The victim was not injured during the incident.

With the popularity of online marketplace options combined with the holiday shopping season, CPD has Internet Purchase Safe Exchange Zones for in-person sales.

Residents can stop by CPD Headquarters at #1 Justice Square, 29201 and Southeast Region – 2132 Devine Street 29205. Additional signs will be set up at other CPD regional offices.

Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind:

* Avoid meeting a buyer or seller in an unfamiliar location. Do NOT go to the buyer or seller’s home or provide your address.

* Best to meet at a law enforcement Internet Purchase Safe Exchange Zone.

*  If you’re not utilizing a safe exchange zone, meet the buyer/seller during the day. Late-night transactions should be avoided.

* Let a family member or friend know your plans/whereabouts

* Do not meet a buyer/seller alone.

* Do not provide strangers with personal or financial information

* Call 9-1-1 for emergencies – Report suspicious activity.
