SCDOT to Start I-77 Bridge Deck Rehabilitation Project March 24

From our partners at the SC Department of Transportation:

Construction work on the Interstate 77 Bridge Deck Rehabilitation Project starts on Friday, March 24. Weather permitting, the project will begin at 9:00 p.m. with the closure of access to I-77 northbound from I-26 to Bluff Road. (I-77 Northbound from I-26 to Bluff Road to Close for 9 days)

The project will rehabilitate a total of 17 bridge decks on both sides of I-77 between the I-26 interchange (mile marker 0) to Bluff Road (mile marker 5).

To minimize traffic disruption, work will be completed under two separate close and detour operations. The northbound closure will begin March 24, and the southbound closure will take place in late April 2023.

Nine northbound bridges and eight southbound bridges will be rehabilitated. Having assessed the condition of all 17 bridge decks, SCDOT will rehabilitate each bridge deck as needed. Some of the construction activity will include the removal of old concrete, pouring new concrete spans, and grinding new concrete to create a smooth driving surface.

SCDOT is repairing and replacing hundreds of deficient bridges across South Carolina as part of the agency’s Strategic 10-Year Plan to improve the state’s roads and bridges.

I-77 Northbound Closure and Detour Information

I-77 Northbound will be closed from the I-26 interchange to Bluff Road starting at 9 p.m. on Friday, March 24 through Sunday, April 2 (9 total days).

The signed detour route is about 20 miles using I-26 Westbound, I-20 Eastbound, and S.C. 277 Northbound. Refer to the Interstate 77 Bridge Deck Rehabilitation Project website for a map.

SCDOT encourages drivers to plan their detour routes in advance. Real-time traffic and road closure information is always available at 511sc.org and on the SCDOT 511 mobile app.
