Man Accused of Stealing Medical Equipment from Local Hospital

Columbia Police Chief W.H. ‘Skip’ Holbrook announces that a 36-year-old former Prisma Health employee has been arrested after being accused of stealing thousands of dollars worth of medical equipment.

Gregory L. Gill is charged with Two Counts of Grand Larceny ($10,000 or more). Gill was initially housed at the Alvin S’ Glenn Detention Center and has since been released after a judge set a $40,000 bond.

Allegations:

Gill is accused of stealing an electrocardiogram (EKG) machine worth an estimated $25,000 from 1330 Taylor Street (Prisma Health Baptist). On February 23, 2023, after reviewing surveillance video of the theft, Prisma Health’s security team reported the crime to CPD.

On March 1, 2023, the same security team notified CPD officers of additional equipment thefts to include two ‘Welch Allyn’ machines worth between $30-50,000 and a mobile computer worth $8,000.

As CPD Property Crimes Unit investigators continue to determine the specific motive in the case, the items may have been stolen for resale purposes.

Investigators have recovered a majority of the medical items from a home on Indigo Springs Drive. CPD is working with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department (RCSD) regarding the ongoing investigation. Additional arrests are pending. Updates will be provided as information becomes available.

All persons charged/arrested are presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
