Dog Found with Embedded Collar in Neck; Female Owner Arrested

A female has been charged in connection with an animal cruelty investigation.

32-year-old Aireal Ames was released from the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center on a $1,000 bond for the charge of Felony Ill Treatment of Animals. She turned herself in to Columbia Police Department (CPD) officers yesterday morning.

Ames is accused of failing to properly care for a Cane Corso named “Banx”. The dog was found wandering the area of Corola Avenue with an embedded collar and a concerned citizen called 9-1-1 for help.

As a result, City of Columbia Animal Control officers responded, found the dog, and called for CPD assistance.

“Banx”

Banx was immediately taken to a veterinarian. In a 17-page report of exam findings, Banx ‘suffered unnecessary pain and suffering.” The veterinarian determined that Banx had an ’emaciated’ body with a body condition of 2 out of 9 on the Purina Body Condition Scale. Banx weighed 88 pounds, had a flea and hookworm infestation, anemia, worn teeth, plus, significant scarring and inflammation of the neck due to the embedded collar.

Good news — Banx is on the mend and had a successful surgery last week to repair his neck. His medical care continues.

Citizens are encouraged to call 9-1-1 to report animal cruelty.

All persons arrested/charged are presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
