Columbia Police Department (CPD) Investigators have arrested two male teenagers in connection with yesterday’s fatal shooting on Ogden Street.

According to Chief W.H. “Skip” Holbrook, 19-year-old Willie Lee Carter, III is charged with Murder, Armed Robbery, Possession of a Weapon during a Violent Crime, Transfer of a Pistol to a Person Under 18, and Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor.

Carter’s 16-year-old alleged accomplice is charged with Murder, Armed Robbery, Possession of a Weapon during a Violent Crime, Unlawful Carrying of a Pistol, and Possession of a Pistol by a Person under 18.  Both suspects are housed at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as 18-year-old Jamari J. Shields.

Case Recap:

At approximately 2:30 p.m. on July 9, 2023, CPD officers were dispatched to the 1600 block of Ogden Street. When officers arrived, they found Shields with a gunshot wound to his upper body.

An initial responding officer applied lifesaving procedures from his city-issued medical kit to help stop the bleeding until EMS arrived to transport the victim to a local hospital. Medical staff pronounced Shields deceased a short time later.

At this time, CPD investigators believe the two suspects met with Shields and stole a firearm from him moments before the shooting occurred.

All persons arrested/charged are presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
