Suspect Charged in Second Missing Man Murder Investigation

Columbia Police Department (CPD) Investigators have filed a second murder charge against a 25-year-old man accused of killing a male who was reported missing in March.

According to Chief W.H. “Skip” Holbrook, an additional arrest warrant was served on 25-year-old Marc-Anthony Rickson Cantrell this afternoon at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. (ASGDC).

He is accused of killing 22-year-old Jared Ondrea who lived in the same halfway house as Cantrell that is located at 2214 Harper Street.  The victim was reported as missing from there in March.  At this time, Ondrea’s body has not been recovered.

Cantrell was initially charged with Murder last month after allegedly killing his former roommate who has been identified by the Richland County Coroner’s Office as 35-year-old Deshea Butler.  CPD Investigators found Butler’s body at the 2200 block of Harper Street on July 6, 2023. Butler was reported missing from 2214 Harper Street on July 4, 2023.

A motive for the murders remains under investigation. The Special Victims Unit (SVU) and the Violent Crimes Against Persons Unit (VCAP) are investigating the cases. CPD has consulted with the Fifth Circuit Solicitor’s Office regarding the investigations.

All persons arrested/charged are presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
