Son Charged in Mother’s Murder Investigation

 The Columbia Police Department (CPD) has charged a 24-year-old man in connection with the death of his mother after an initial suspicious death investigation in September.

According to Police Chief W.H. “Skip” Holbrook, Michael Ray Joyner is charged with Murder and housed at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

Incident recap

On September 14, 2023, shortly after 5:00 p.m., CPD officers were dispatched to the 300 block of Byron Road after a female was found unresponsive inside her home. A male acquaintance made the discovery during a welfare check of the victim and immediately called the police. According to the Richland County Coroner’s Office, 66-year-old Mary Wilson died from blunt force trauma.

CPD investigators believe that suspect Joyner argued with his mother before the incident.

All persons arrested/charged are presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
