Arrests Made in Ripplemeyer Avenue Shooting Investigations

By January 12, 2024Press Releases

Columbia Police Department (CPD) investigators have charged an 18-year-old in connection with a shooting that happened at an apartment complex earlier this week.

Police Chief W. H. ‘Skip’ Holbrook announces that 18-year-old Tyrone Thompson, Junior is charged with Unlawful Carrying of a Pistol. Thompson was released from the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center on a $1,000 surety bond set by a judge.

At approximately 6:00 p.m. on January 10, 2024, at 100 Ripplemeyer Avenue (North Pointe Estates), Thompson is accused of shooting a 16-year-old male in the upper body during a struggle during an attempted robbery. At last check, the 16-year-old was listed in stable condition at a local hospital.

CPD investigators continue to conduct interviews, review surveillance video, and determine the circumstances surrounding the incident, including what led up to the struggle.

In a related case the next morning and after receiving a Shotspotter alert, CPD officers responded to 100 Ripplemeyer Avenue for another shooting. After reviewing surveillance video and speaking with several people on scene, CPD officers identified 21-year-old William Wright, III as a relative of the injured 16-year-old from the January 10 shooting.

Wright was arrested and charged with Attempted Burglary – First Degree, Discharging a Firearm into a Dwelling, Breach of Peace of a High and Aggravated Nature, Possession of a Weapon during a Violent Crime, and Unlawful Carrying of a Pistol. At last check, Wright remained housed at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center under a $150,000 surety bond; at this time, bond was denied for the attempted burglary charge.

Wright is accused of trying to kick in the front door of an occupied apartment and firing multiple rounds at the home. Thankfully, no one was injured. At this time, CPD investigators believe Wright acted in retaliation after his relative was injured the day before. The home that was damaged by gunfire had no involvement with the January 10 shooting.

All persons arrested/charged are presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
