Man Charged with Several Crimes, Including Stabbing an Officer

Columbia Police Department (CPD) officers have arrested a 44-year-old man in connection with multiple crimes, including stabbing a CPD officer.

Police Chief W.H. ‘Skip’ Holbrook announces that Brian R. King (DOB: 12-11-1980) is housed at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center charged with Assault and Battery of a High and Aggravated Nature, Resisting Arrest with a Deadly Weapon, Assault on an Officer while Resisting Arrest, Possession of a Weapon during a Violent Crime, First Degree Burglary, Auto-Breaking, Grand Larceny, Malicious Injury to Real Property, and Escape.

King has a lengthy state criminal history with twenty-six (26) arrests from nine (9) agencies, and twenty-three (23) convictions for offenses including: drug possession, domestic violence, hit and run with great bodily injury, and probation violation. He is also federally prohibited from possessing a firearm.

CPD Investigations:

At approximately 11:30 a.m. on June 9, 2025, CPD officers were dispatched to the 1200 block of Elmwood Avenue for a report about a man vandalizing a business. Initially, the business owner repeatedly asked the suspect, King, to leave. King, who was described as being irate, refused to leave and attempted to hit the business owner with a metal object. Luckily, the victim was not hurt. Afterwards, King allegedly tried to break into a building next door.

When officers arrived on Elmwood Avenue and found King, he ran away. Officers ran after and caught up with King during his arrest; King allegedly became combative with officers and tried to avoid being arrested.

After officers arrested him, King was taken to a hospital by ambulance as a precaution and escaped custody. Additional CPD officers, including a K-9 team, were requested to help locate him.

King ran into the Elmwood neighborhood and attempted to break into a home at the 1000 block of Pope Street.

While there, the suspect is accused of stealing a car and crashing it into a street sign. During his crime spree, King broke into an unoccupied house and stole a pocketknife.

A short time later, a CPD officer found King and as he tried to arrest him, King is accused of using the stolen pocketknife to stab the officer in the upper arm.

Though injured, the officer managed to arrest King. Additional backup officers secured King inside a patrol vehicle. Luckily, the officer’s injury was not life-threatening. He was taken to a hospital for treatment and later discharged the same day.
