Columbia Police Response on Gervais Street Road Closure Incident

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Just after 8 a.m. on Monday, August 3, 2026, Columbia Police officers responded to the 1300 block of Sumter Street in reference to a reported carjacking and kidnapping. At the same time, officers were dispatched to the 1200 block of Gervais Street for a traffic collision involving injuries.

Based on the preliminary investigation, Columbia Police Department investigators believe the two incidents are directly related.

At this time, the Columbia Police Department is not searching for any outstanding suspects in connection with these incidents. One individual involved has been taken into police custody and will be charged upon release from the hospital. The remaining individuals involved are receiving medical treatment.

“This was a serious incident that demanded an immediate and coordinated response from our officers and our public safety partners,” said Chief W.H. ‘Skip’ Holbrook. “While this remains an active investigation, we want our community to know that this appears to be an isolated incident. There is no ongoing threat to the public, and our officers remain committed to protecting everyone who lives, works, and visits downtown Columbia. We appreciate the community’s patience as investigators continue their work.”

The investigation remains active. Additional information, including the identity of the individual in custody and any applicable charges, will be released at the appropriate time as the investigation progresses.
