The Columbia Police Department’s (CPD) Traffic Safety Unit is partnering with the South Carolina Highway Patrol’s annual Sober or Slammer Campaign which focuses on impaired driving prevention.
Today, law enforcement agencies conducted public safety checkpoints in the area to make roadways safe during the busy holiday travel season.
In South Carolina, a driving under the influence (DUI) arrest carries hefty fines and significant jail time, based on the offense.
According to CPD’s Lt. Derek Miller, the ramifications can have far-reaching affects, “A lot of times, when people are convicted of DUI, can lose their license, or can face higher insurance rates, and any fines or fees in court, and other issues you can face in your personal life.”
Whether its during the holiday season, or during the rest of the rear, never get behind the wheel of a vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, always designate a sober driver and call 9-1-1 or *HP to report a suspected drunk driver.
