Columbia Police Chief Skip Holbrook announces the arrest of a man who allegedly refused to surrender to CPD officers yesterday afternoon.

Donald Shavell Ward (DOB: 9-5-1987) is accused of refusing to come out of a Gable Oaks Apartment at 901 Colleton Street on June 22, 2016.

Acting on a Crimestoppers tip, North Region Officers, Fugitive Team members, SC Law Enforcement Division (SLED) Agents, and Richland County Sheriff’s (RCSD) Deputies went there to serve Ward with a General Sessions bench warrant for failure to appear in court.

The warrant stems from a December 2014 CPD case where Ward allegedly shot a man during an armed robbery on House Street. At that time, Ward was charged with Attempted Murder, Armed Robbery, and Possession of a Weapon during the Commission of a Violent Crime and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.

Yesterday, officers confirmed Ward’s location and he allegedly refused to answer the door for approximately two hours after repeated, verbal commands to surrender to law enforcement.

During the attempts and due to Ward’s criminal history and propensity for violence, additional officers and members of the CPD SWAT Team were called to the scene. A search warrant was granted and executed at the location. Officers went inside the apartment where Ward surrendered to CPD and was taken into custody.

Ward is currently being housed at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

All persons arrested/charged are presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
