Pedestrian Killed in Train Collision

The Columbia Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit is investigating a fatal collision involving a pedestrian and train.

The incident occurred shortly before 3:00 a.m. at the 1600 block of Lorick Avenue.

According to witnesses,  the male pedestrian was walking eastbound on Lorick Avenue and for an unknown reason ignored the active crossing warning devices as the Amtrack train was approaching.

As a result, the train made contact with the pedestrian who was transported to a local hospital and pronounced deceased.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office is working on identifying the man and notifying next of kin.
