Teenagers Charged in Burglary & Stolen Vehicle Investigation

Columbia Police Department officers have charged three teenagers in connection with a home burglary and stolen car investigation.

The teens, who are 19, 18 and 16 are accused of breaking into a Summerlea Drive home shortly after 8:00 a.m. on November 12, 2017.

Rashad Washington (DOB: 6-16-1998) and Demondre Jones (DOB: 1-3-1999) are charged with Second Degree Burglary, Malicious Injury to PropertyPossession of a Stolen Vehicle, and Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor.

Responding North Region officers found that the rear door of the home was forced open. They checked the outside and inside of the home to make sure the suspects were not still on scene. Then a nearby witness provided officers with a description of the suspects since he saw them leaving the area on foot.

Circulating officers found three male matching the description of the suspects walking along Johnson Avenue near Hyatt Park and detained them.

As officers searched the suspects, they found vehicle keys to from an SUV. It was determined that the keys were from a stolen SUV from a previous incident.

The trio is accused of driving the stolen vehicle to Summerlea Drive to commit the home burglary.

They were able to leave the Summerlea Drive home because they had a difficult time starting the engine. According to the initial victim, you have to ‘jiggle’ the keys in the ignition to make it work.

The teens were transported to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center (ASDGC). At last check, Washington remained in jail on a $100,000 bond; Jones remained in jail under a $75,000.

The 16-year-old male was housed in the juvenile section of the ASGDC.

All persons arrested/charged are presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty in a court of law.
