Arrest Made in Dog Theft Investigation

Investigators with the Columbia Police Department’s (CPD) Property Crimes Unit have arrested a man accused of breaking into the City of Columbia’s Animal Shelter and stealing a female pit bull.

19-year-old Raqwan Thompson is charged with Burglary – Second Degree and Larceny. A judge set his bond at $30,000.

Thompson and an unidentified co-defendant are seen on surveillance video inside the shelter (127 Humane Lane) without permission and trying

to disguise their faces on January 20, 2018.

The duo is accused of stealing two dogs, but one escaped and was located by animal control personnel the next day.

This morning, the CPD investigator assigned to the case received word that the stolen female pit bull was found unharmed wandering  in Cayce. The animal will be returned to the City of Columbia animal shelter as soon as possible.

Thompson is currently housed at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. All persons arrested/charged are presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
