Teenager Charged with Carjacking and Weapons Violations

Columbia Police Department (CPD) investigators have arrested a 19-year-old male on multiple charges in connection with a carjacking investigation.

Shawkeem Reese (DOB: 5-13-1999) is charged with Carjacking, Possession of a Stolen Pistol, Possession of a Weapon during the Commission of a Violent Crime, Hit and Run (Attended Vehicle), Failure to Stop for Blue Lights, and Driving Without a License.

The investigation began on June 29, 2018 at 1737 Mayer Street shortly after 5:00 a.m. when Reese allegedly demanded the male victim’s car at gunpoint.  The victim complied and Reese was last seen leaving the area in the stolen vehicle, a 2007 Chrysler 300.

A description of the vehicle was provided through the 9-1-1 dispatch center and within a few minutes of the crime, another CPD officer spotted the car and initiated a traffic stop at the 2800 block of West Beltline Boulevard.

Reese allegedly failed to stop for blue lights and sirens and instead, attempted to leave the area. During the attempt, Reese collided with a parked vehicle at the 4200 block of West Beltline Boulevard, got out of the stolen car and ran away. After a brief foot chase, Reese was arrested.

Reese was then transported to CPD HQ for questioning before being taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

All persons arrested/charged are presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
