Update: Man Charged in Kent Street Stabbing Death Investigation

Columbia Police Department (CPD) investigators have charged a 39-year-old man in connection with the stabbing death that occurred on Kent Street earlier this month.

As a result, Antonio Deron Alston (DOB: 12-31-1978) is currently housed at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center (ASGDC) charged with Murder and Possession of a Weapon during the Commission of a Violent Crime.

Alston was found and arrested last night during a traffic stop by the Swansea Police Department. Members of the CPD Fugitive Team traveled to Lexington County last night to transport Alston to Columbia to face his charges.

Alston is accused of stabbing the victim, who was previously identified by Richland County Coroner Gary Watts as 33-year-old Rodney Parish Stewart in the upper body at 2417 Kent Street on July 8, 2018.

During the course of the investigation, officers determined that the suspect and victim were arguing moments before the stabbing occurred.

The argument escalated into a physical confrontation when Alston allegedly grabbed a bladed instrument and stabbed Stewart multiple times in the chest. Stewart was pronounced deceased five days later.

All persons arrested/charged are presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
