Crimestoppers: Putnam Street Fatal Shooting Investigation

Columbia Police Department (CPD) officers continue to investigate a fatal shooting that occurred this morning claiming the life of a 77-year-old man.

Officers were called to 2730 Putnam Road for a shots fired call and located the victim outside of the home.  The man was transported to a local hospital where medical staff pronounced him deceased.

The Richland County Coroner Gary Watts has identified the victim as 77-year-old Alphonso Rowe. An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow.

Investigators would like to locate the victim’s son, 18-year-old Devin Rowe in connection with the shooting.  They believe he likely has information to aid the investigation. Currently, Devin Rowe has outstanding arrest warrants in connection with a July 9, 2019 burglary and theft at a North Beltline Road home. Again, at this time, CPD investigators want to locate Devin Rowe for questioning only in connection with today’s shooting.

Chief W. H. ‘Skip’ Holbrook says,“We believe he was possibly the individual who was involved in a dispute. A couple of months ago we were at the same residence and he was part of a dispute and shots were fired on that previous date. There’s evidence of that shooting still present today.”

Chief adds, “Clearly there is a pattern of violence here that continues to escalate and that’s concerning.  I can tell you that the individual that was hit had nothing to do with this.”

Citizens with information about the shooting or Devin Rowe’s whereabouts are encouraged to contact CRIMESTOPPERS in any of the following ways:
