Incident Recap:

At approximately 1:00 a.m. today, officers were dispatched to 510 Heyward Street for a ‘shots fired’ call. When they arrived on scene, they were able to ascertain the circumstances of the shooting and detain two people who were later questioned by investigators and named suspects after an interview process.

According to several witnesses on scene, Gainey and Shumaker argued with other residents outside the apartment building, retrieved handguns from inside their apartments, and then returned to physically fight with the victims. The suspects are accused of shooting in the air multiple times. No one was injured during the incident.  Officers found the suspects after they retreated inside their residence, detained them and brought them to CPD Headquarters for questioning.

Officers on scene collected ballistic evidence as part of the investigation. The University of South Carolina Department of Law Enforcement and Safety assisted CPD with the investigation.

All persons arrested/charged are presumed innocent or until proven guilty in a court of law.
