CPD Joins National Rail Safety Initiative “Operation Clear Track”

By September 21, 2020Press Releases

The Columbia Police Department (CPD) joins  law enforcement agencies in the U.S. and Canada today for “Operation Clear Track” — the single largest rail-safety law-enforcement initiative in North America.

Coordinated by Amtrak, Operation Lifesaver Inc. and Operation Lifesaver Canada, Operation Clear Track aims to reduce the number of railway crossing and trespassing incidents in the U.S. and Canada — incidents which seriously injure or kill more than 2,100 people each year. The event is held during the annual observance of Rail Safety Week, September 21-27.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, law enforcement agencies will be participating in a virtual Operation Clear Track event this year. Police and sheriff departments across North America will be promoting rail safety through social media messages, by sharing Operation Lifesaver’s #STOPTrackTragedies

Safety Tips for drivers and pedestrians:

  • NEVER walk, run, play or take pictures on the railroad right-of-way
  • NEVER attempt to outrun an approaching train
  • NEVER drive or walk around lowered cross guard gates
  • NEVER get trapped on railroad tracks
  • NEVER jump on a stopped train to make it to the either side
  • ALWAYS expect a train
  • Only cross the tracks at designated public crossings
  • Pay attention to flashing red lights & other notfications of an approaching train

In South Carolina, violators can receive hefty fines of either $232.50 under the Code of Laws Section 56-5-2710; Obedience to signal indicating approach of train. Traffic must stop when signals say train is coming or $440.00 under Section 56-5-2735; Obstructing intersection or grade crossing; passing near grade crossing; traffic lines when stopped at railroad crossing; vehicles in tow.
