The Dr. John Stevenson Youth Fellowship Program, a 6-week virtual learning experience, is accepting applications from youth ages 12-18 residing in the 29203 zip code of Columbia until March 31.
Named in honor of the first African American Superintendent of Richland One, Columbia educator Dr. John Stevenson, the Stevenson Fellowship was created to serve as introductory programming to educate and equip local youth to be empowered activists and change agents for their community. The students will learn tactics for identifying problems, developing solutions, countering oppression, community building, critical thinking and how to minimize inequities.
“There are no absolutes in social justice and community organizing, but I believe dignity and deep listening are pillars we can stand on,” said Omari Fox, Lead Community Organizer for Serve & Connect. “Sure we have a template, but it will be the spirit of the youth fellows that drives the community engagement from their perspective and style, and I’m excited to witness what unfolds. Every generation has their authors to the narrative of the day, and this fellowship will create a safe space for the emerging leaders to live it and write it their way.”
Deputy Chief Melron Kelly of the Columbia Police Department said, “I was born and raised in 29203, so I know how creative and solution-oriented we can be as a community when given the opportunity. I’m thrilled to be a part of the new Stevenson Fellowship for youth in our city, and I look forward to the collaborative work we’ll do as these young people imagine and create a better Columbia.”
The Stevenson Fellowship is powered by the North Columbia Youth Empowerment Initiative in partnership with local nonprofit and government entities that include Serve & Connect, the City of Columbia, Columbia Police Department, Junior League of Columbia and the University of South Carolina Collaborative on Race.
The students participating in the inaugural cohort will be provided funding and mentorship to develop a community-sourced solution for an issue specific to the 29203 area. Upon completion of the project, the students will have the opportunity to present their solution to local stakeholders.
Students who reside in 29203 who are interested in applying for the Stevenson Fellowship may do so via the application. Applications will be accepted until March 31, and the programming will begin on April 10.
