18-Year-Old Arrested in Shots Fired Call at Park Place Apartments

Columbia Police Department (CPD) investigators have arrested an 18-year-old male in connection with an isolated shooting incident at an apartment complex. Thankfully, no one was injured.

This morning, Bryan L. Cockfield from Hartsville, S.C. was located at a relative’s home in Hartsville and arrested by CPD investigators and the United States Marshal Service’s (USMS) Carolinas Regional Task Force this morning.

Cockfield will be housed at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center (ASGDC) after being charged with Unlawful Carrying of a Pistol and Breach of Peace of a High and Aggravated Nature.

The charges stem from an incident on March 18, 2023, at 506 Huger Street (Park Place Apartments) when Cockfield allegedly fired multiple rounds outside of the complex.

Incident Recap:

CPD officers were dispatched to the location for several reports of ‘shots fired.’ Officers spoke with several witnesses on scene who explained that someone fired multiple shots in the air before leaving the scene.

Investigators believe that Cockfield was previously inside an apartment and hallway when a large fight started. As people ran away from the fight and made it outside of the complex, Cockfield allegedly discharged his firearm before leaving the scene.

University of South Carolina (USC) students who reside at the complex notified USC Department of Law Enforcement and Safety about the incident. Officers responded to the scene and assisted CPD investigators.  A motive for the shooting remains under investigation. Witness information and video surveillance aided in the identification and arrest of the teen suspect.

All persons arrested/charged are presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty in a court of law.
