29-Year-Old Suspect Charged with Assembly Street Fatal Shooting

Columbia Police Department (CPD) Investigators have arrested a 29-year-old man in connection with a fatal shooting that happened earlier this week.

According to Chief W.H. “Skip” Holbrook,  Johnny William Darby, III is housed at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center (ASGDC) charged with Murder, Possession of a Weapon during a Violent Crime, Unlawful Carrying of a Handgun, Possession of a Stolen Handgun, and Possession of a Handgun by a Person Convicted of a Crime of Violence.

On Tuesday, June 6, 2023, Darby allegedly fatally shot the 42-year-old victim, identified by the Richland County Coroner’s Office as Leonard Colvin in the upper body.

Moments after the shooting, CPD and University of South Carolina (USC) Department of Public Safety and Law Enforcement officers detained Darby near the crime scene on Hampton Street. During the arrest, a gun was located on Darby and seized as evidence.

After conducting additional interviews regarding the incident and reviewing surveillance video, murder arrest warrants were served on Darby today.

A motive for the shooting remains under investigation.

All persons arrested/charged are presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
